Narrow aisle lift trucks are essential for modern storage operations. By allowing wide corridor as close as 6 feet, which greatly increase the number of ships that can fit into a given stock, and, in turn, increases storage capacity.
Standard forklifts need for the corridors are 11 'wide or larger to be able to operate and turn. Narrow aisle lift trucks (NA) are able to operate in aisles 8 'to 10' wide and very narrow aisle forklifts (VNAs) can work in aisles only 6 'wide. Note that "narrow aisle forklift" and "very narrow aisle forklift" are standard in the industry, not just descriptions.
The key aspect of narrow aisle lift trucks is that their holders are converted into a right angle to the body of the truck. This allows them to go straight down the aisle, but pick up loads at the side. By eliminating the need to have the truck in front of the shelves that would greatly reduce their space requirements.
Given that often operate with little margin for error, very narrow aisle lift trucks are available with guidance systems. Optical or wire guidance systems that run the length of the aisle to keep the forklift on a steady path, allowing the operator to focus on the collection and placement of loads.
Narrow aisle lift trucks are almost all electric, as they are used indoors, although some propane-powered models are available. It also offers cushion tires - soft, solid rubber tires that are best for paved surfaces and concrete floors.
Other additions that are valuable to narrow aisle lift trucks:
- Side shift this very popular option allows the operator to move cargo from the left and right without moving the truck, allowing much more accurate placement of loads.
- Tilting mast - The ability to tilt the mast and forks forward and backward is useful if the charges are not exactly level. Slightly tilting the mast is also providing greater stability on the move, while a loaded truck.
- Expandable forks. Add extendable forks increases the "scope" of the forklift, which allows what, is known as "double-deep" load: the stacking of pallets in front of the other.
- Operator platforms - Some NA forklifts up and down the operator with the forks. When the cargo handling 20 'or 30', this allows greater visibility and control that takes an operator at ground level.
